Meet Aanya
Biology BSc
The transition from southeast Asia was big but I have settled into Newcastle really well and I am embracing a new culture.
Something that surprised me about the city
One of the main things that surprised me about the city is the number of things there are to do for students. The city has a range of things to do from a huge number of cafes and places for food from all over the world. You can also reach the countryside and coastline easily using public transport which is great for weekends and to get away from studying. I also noticed how friendly the people of the North-east are!
Outside of my studies
Newcastle is not like a city. It is located close to amazing nature and scenic places to go and visit. I often like to walk around the city and take day trips to Northumberland and discover the amazing nature that it has to offer. I also regularly visit Tynemouth by the coast and Jesmond Dene in my spare time.
Newcastle has a perfect blend of city life but also nature and outstanding beauty spots that are easy to get to.
My favourite part of my course
I really enjoy my course here at Newcastle. The blend of research and reality is the perfect method of learning all things Biology and fits with my learning style. The fieldwork trips and number of modules really stand out to me when studying Biology. I really enjoy how broad the subject is, as there is so much we get to learn about, meaning I get to discover new areas of the subject.
There are also research and placement opportunities which help me when looking at my future beyond my studies.
Why you should pick this degree
My advice to you is that if you are interested in Biology but not quite ready to specialise, this course would be great for you. The learning is quite broad which allowed me to understand what I enjoy most and sparked interest in areas I did not even know existed. The course covers everything in the biology field and makes you prepared for the next step in science.
