Moving out of student accommodation

Move-out day is here. In this blog, we cover essential tips for a smooth checkout, from packing efficiently to final inspections, ensuring you leave your student accommodation positively.

Let’s make it easy, organised, and maybe even a little fun…

It’s that time of year again—assignments are wrapping up, goodbyes are starting, and the reality of moving out is creeping in. But don’t worry, ResLife has your back with some simple ways to make the whole process smoother (and less stressful).

Boxing Giveaway – because no one wants to panic-pack

Down in the ResLife social spaces during Term 2, we’ll be hosting a Box Giveaway—so keep an eye out and stay up to date by following us on Instagram.

We’ll have new and recycled boxes, tape, and pens ready for you to grab and go.

Whether you’re an organised packer or more of a “throw it all in and hope for the best” type, we’ll also be sharing top tips and tricks to help you pack smarter, not harder—like labelling boxes, grouping items, and avoiding that dreaded “where did I put my charger?” moment.

ReHome – one person’s extra is another’s essential

Last year we launched ReHome, and it was a huge success! It gave students the chance to pick up useful items donated by previous residents—everything from kitchenware to storage solutions.

Now it’s your turn to keep the cycle going.

If you’ve got items you no longer need, drop them into our ResLife ReHome bins located in laundries, social spaces, and receptions. You’ll be helping out next year’s students and making their move-in day a whole lot easier.

Items we’re looking for:

  • clothes drying racks
  • laundry baskets
  • coat hangers
  • kitchenware (pans, cutlery, crockery)
  • storage baskets & household essentials

It’s sustainable, helpful, and honestly—way better than binning perfectly good stuff.

Donating Food – small effort, big impact

Got unopened food you won’t use before heading home? Don’t let it go to waste.

At reception areas, you’ll find food donation stations where you can drop off non-perishable items. These go directly to local food banks—so you’ll be leaving the city on a positive note.

You can donate things like:

  • Rice
  • Pasta & noodles
  • Canned fruit & vegetables
  • Cereals
  • Soups
  • Condiments & sauces
  • Canned protein (tuna, chicken, etc.)

A few tins from your cupboard could really help someone else.

Don’t be that flatmate…

You know the one. Leaves a mystery yoghurt in the fridge. Disappears before cleaning. Don’t do it

Start chatting with your flatmates early about:

  • who’s leaving when
  • who’s responsible for what
  • how you’ll tackle shared spaces

If everyone does their bit—clearing cupboards, cleaning up, and taking responsibility—it makes move-out smoother for everyone. Plus, it’s just a nice way to end the year on a good note.

Moving out doesn’t have to be chaotic. With a little planning (and a bit of help from ResLife), you can wrap up your year feeling organised, stress-free, and maybe even proud of how adult you’ve become.
