Current research
After completing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering focussing on tissue inflammatory and osteolytic responses to materials used for orthopaedic joint replacement, Shannon is now a post-doctoral Research Associate in the Newcastle University Translational and Clinical Research Institute. The current ongoing research forms part of a wider Tissue and Explant Analysis of Medical Implant Failure (TEAM) study which involves the investigation of tissue responses in patients undergoing removal of failed implants. Shannon currently works on understanding the role of the immune system in the failure of urogynaecological meshes used for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse using transcriptomic and spatial proteomic techniques. As part of the TEAM study, Shannon is also investigating inflammatory responses in the synovium of patients with failed joint replacements.
